Today, the good folks at Google Android have released the long awaited version 1.6, codenamed "Donut." This tasty pastry brings along some neat additions to Cupcake (version 1.5).

New things include:

  • CDMA Support (Hello Hero for Sprint!)
  • Quick search box for searching contacts, the phone, and the internet (think of it as Windows Vista/7's start menu search + google.
  • Text to Speech API for many langauges (available from the Android Market)
  • New Android Market GUI
  • Support for multiple screen sizes and resolutions

So if you're rocking a T-Mobile device, expec the update to be pushed OTA (over the air) soon (G1's today and MyTouch's tomorrow, why them first?). If you are running Cyanogen or another mod, you'll likely have many of the 1.6 OS features since the SDK has been out for a little bit. To get the full update, you'll have to wait or unroot your rooted phone.

I will update this post when I have received and applied the update.

UPDATE #1: It's 10/3, two days, later and T-Mobile still has not pushed the update. Going to Settings > About Phone > System updates does nothing.

Update #2: 10/6. Got the update early this morning. Took less than 10 minutes to install. With the new update, everything is faster now!
